Half the fun is in the journey

If we live in our minds, why can't we go on vacation there too?

When people look at my work my hope is that they can smell the air and feel the breeze. Ultimately, I want to share the serenity I feel in that moment.

It's not just taking beautiful pictures. It's the people, the adventures, the lighting and the experience. Sometimes I hike to the top of a mountain and sometimes I lay in the mud, but every time I capture that perfect moment it's exhilarating.

Let the adventure begin...

Every shoot starts with four basic questions, are my batteries charged, do I have sufficient card space, what am I shooting and where am I going?

Research is essential for any location. If I'm shooting in a building, park, drainage ditch, alley or any other location that is easily accessible that's one thing, but, If I'm shooting a new location it's always important to research the area as best possible. Once I've familiarized myself with the land, weather, sunrise and sunset of the area, it's time prepare to be spontaneous (don't know how that works but it does).

Once on location I take my time finding the right spot to shoot and generally take mulitple shots from along the way until I find exactly what I'm looking for. Finally, I get to capture that perfect moment.... Geeez what took so long.... I always love watching the environment dance with the light. K, hope this works.

Now for the edit, there are very few photos that I leave completely untouched. My general workflow starts with Adobe Lightroom, where I adjust the RAW images. After Lightroom I export for Photoshop where I finalize the image and prepare versions for web and print.

From Camp To Camera

one of my favorite parts of photography is the gear and equipment necessary to safely capture the vast landscapes we visit. It is my lifeline to beautiful imagery and without it I wouldn't be able to do my work. Keep in mind it's not just a camera and a computer, most situations require outdoor gear too.

Now, the camera is the most important piece of equipment, but there are many other filters and attachments that help produce interesting effects while others remove unwanted phenomena. Deciding what gear you need depends on where you're going, how you're getting there and what your subject will be.

The camp is broke up into different versions depending on the scenario. The four basic versions are day hike, wilderness camp, car camp and base camp. Each setup requires that we evaluate and pack the gear necessary for the area based the length of time we'll be there.

The final piece of equipment is the workstation, it's the last piece in the process and keeping it updated, protected, and backed up is critical.
